Art of Learning seen from a teacher’s
perspective
By Ida Nordstrand Veskje, teacher at Søre Ål school, Lillehammer, Norway.
I have been so lucky to be a teacher in the Art of Learning project here in Norway. We started the Art of Learning in 2nd grade and finished now at the end of 3rd grade.
I feel so lucky that I got to start doing the Art of Learning so early in my career, and have the opportunity to think like a child. AOL has helped me on my path to find out what kind of teacher I want to be. When teaching fractions for example, it can be super dull and difficult to learn, but if you make fractions into a pizza themed week with learning English, arts and crafts along with fractions, it is suddenly super fun!
In the beginning we asked ourselves how we were supposed to teach 53 pupils for 90 minutes straight? We were afraid that the whole thing would just turn into chaos, and to be honest in the beginning it did. But when we understood how to work as the programme intended, the pupils were so busy with their tasks that they forgot that we were supposed to have breaks. I guess that is what they call irresistible learning.
