Result from pilots:
AoL Ayrshire pilot 1 and 2: the evidence from the results of the Yellow/Red assessments on participating children and those from control groups suggested that the intervention had a positive effect on those who participated; differences between the groups in two of the more complex games show relative improvements in the participating children. Importantly, although the differences between the two groups are not significant in numbers, the trend is consistent. This evidence suggests that significant improvements could be made with a longer-term intervention.
AoL Oppland pilot 3: the results of the BRIEF-test showed that the intervention group had significantly (p = <.05) better development of its EF than the control group, and the quantitative findings were supported by qualitative results. These results clearly indicated that a curriculum using the arts and culture as a method over time is beneficial for the development of EF in children, followed by better vocabulary, listening skills, and inclusion in the participating classes.
As the pilots were very small in terms of the numbers of schools and children involved the results were not conclusive, but they were promising and built an interest in developing the AoL and a need for exploring it on a larger scale which the Art of Learning 4STEAM project presented in this Storybook is a response to.
