Art of Learning from parent’s perspective
Erlend Gjelsvik
Parent in Art of Learning at Søre Ål School, Lillehammer, Norway
Art of Learning has changed our dinner conversations. Our nine-
year-ord has “grown up” with AoL in school. He might think AoL is
a subject where they do a great variety of things. He does not himself
understand the extent of what he learns, connects or understand. But we
as parents hear that he is in the middle of knowledge development where he absorbs traditional curriculum content by “doing it” in an AoL community where they are “learning by doing” together. It is incredibly exciting, and leads to engaging storytelling around the dinner table.
At the parental meetings, the teachers explicitly say that working with the artist in AoL has changed their thinking around learning and pedagogy, and that they embrace the artist and her approach to curriculum and learning objectives. It seems that the teachers are wholeheartedly involved in the same development of knowledge as the students, and thus makes AoL an even larger part of the students’ daily lives than was initially thought. As parents, we are proud that our nine-year-old can take part in this.
